Microsoft have great plans for the future of Xbox LIVE gaming when the platform is made available on Windows Phone 7 devices in the near future. During the Microsoft X10 conference in Toronto, it was stated that eventually Windows Phone 7 games connected to Xbox LIVE would be able to play against gamers on the Xbox 360 console in real-time multiplayer.
Quoted by Greg Milligan, Microsoft Canada Mobility Solutions Manager:
“We are working on real-time phone-to-console, likely initially through Wi-Fi,”
“That’s not on day one… Day one will be turn-by-turn as well as companion-type gaming where you play a level on the phone and it may unlock a level or a weapon or some special achievement on the console game. But yeah, absolutely working on phone-to-console real-time. That’s something we’re working on and expect to have in the near future.”
Milligan didn’t go into great depths on the functionality, but the feature would only be available to games that support the option. Microsoft will be approving all of the Xbox LIVE enabled games for Windows Phone 7, and as of yet - no developers have announced Windows Phone 7, Xbox LIVE multiplayer capabilities, just support for adding Achievements to your Xbox LIVE profile.
