Nintendo reigns supreme over in Japan

Japanese sales tracker Media Create has updated with the latest data, showing continued dominance for Nintendo and its duo of the Wii and DS, whilst Sony has dropped to an all-time low.

The latest chart update for the week of 7th May to 13th May has been revealed and we at Nintendic have gone through translating each title so you can clearly see which company is the victor for this period. The big new release of the week was the port of the PSone’s Final Fantasy Tactics to the PlayStation Portable, storming home at No.1 with just over 150,000 sales. However, whilst this may seem impressive, even Final Fantasy Tactics Advance on the GBA a few years back was able to sell more than 200,000 units easily in its first week. In a good week for Square Enix, its other Final Fantasy game, Revenant Wings on DS, manages to grab second position after two weeks at No.1, now accruing more than 420,000 units in just three weeks.

Other than that, the rest of the Top 10 is completely dominated by Nintendo, with long-time performers such as More Brain Training and New Super Mario Bros. surging back up after increased promotional work during the recent Japanese holiday of Golden Week. Big Brain Academy on Wii may have started slow in its first week, but has now clawed its way to nearly 120,000 sales and seems to be mimicking its younger DS brother in terms of sticking power. Finally, at No.10, there is Yoshi’s Island, which definitely looks like it will go on to join the large list of titles that have sold more than a million units on the DS in Japan alone.

Final Fantasy Tactics on PSP Claims No.1

What can Sony do for the PS3?

As for the hardware situation this week, even though there has been large drop-offs across the board, the DS Lite barges past everything else once more, selling through a tremendous 160,000+ units, with even the Wii pulling in a respectable 52,000+ sales to keep itself above the PlayStation Portable, which lies in third position with a very healthy 34,433 units sold. What is most shocking this week, though, is how the PlayStation 3 has fallen below the 10,000 mark to a terrible 8,839! Where Sony goes from here in Japan nobody knows, but something needs to be sorted or else the company that once had such a strong grip on the nation will fade away before the race has really begun…The full list is below:
