Pokemon Diamond/Pearl hits Europe July 27

The torturous wait for Pokefans dwelling across Europe will soon be coming to an end, thanks to the announcement that Pokemon Diamond and Pearl will be released across the continent on July 27.

We’ve no doubt that despite the delay the game will sell in droves and droves. And if there was any hard feeling from Pokemon fans, to soften the blow Nintendo has teamed up with videogames retailer, GAME, to rekindle your faith. British Pokefans who preorder at GAME will be offered either a Dialga (Diamond) or Palkia (Pearl) stylus when pre-ordering the title. How does that sound? …What do you mean it’s tacky rubbish for gullible people?!

Pokemon and Diamond takes the well-worked formula for the series, with players assuming the role of a Pokemon Trainer who sets off from the town to Twinleaf, set in the idyllic region of Sinnoh. At the request of Professor Rowan, players must travel around Sinnoh to track down and capture each of the 100 new Pokemon species, all the while whilst trying to achieve their ultimate goal of becoming Pokemon League champion by defeating the eight Pokemon Gym Leaders that stand in their way. It won’t be all plain sailing, mind you - not if the pesky Team Galactic has anything to do with it, so you’d better keep your wits about you.

For the first time in the series’ history, players can connect to the Nintendo Wi-Fi service to battle, trade and voice chat with other owners of the game from anywhere across the globe. In addition, the DS’ touch screen makes competition quicker and more accessible then ever before. You’ll also be able to transfer over your Pocket Monsters from the Game Boy Advance’s Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, LeafGreen and Emerald versions of the game, but not until you’ve met certain in-game requirements.

Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl are already being enjoyed by millions of people. In America, independent sales data gathered by the NPD Group showed combined sales exceeded 1.75 million copies in just 14 days of availability, and in Japan over five million copies have been sold since launch in September 2006. Wowza!

What’s more to be said? It’s Pokemon, and you’re either going to buy it or you’re not! Reviews since the Japanese and North American releases have been positive overall, amazing for a franchise that has barely changed over the years, yet still manages to emit some amazing, inexorable appeal to millions of fans. Dude, just import it from the US. DS games are not region locked and it works just fine. I got it on release day US.

How can we trade our Pokemon over from Ruby and Sapphire though? I don’t see any way to trade from GBA to DS >.

You can’t right away. I think you have to finish the game (beat the elite four) before you can do that. I have 30 hours into the game and am only about 50% through.

You get exchange mystery gifts with someone who’s registered as your friend. Nintendo may have an event some time and release one on the WFC.
