Nintendo's Harrison: Game Boy dying?

In an interview with GameDaily, Nintendo’s Phil Harrison made some fairly non-committal and or dismissive comments about the Game Boy. Once the king of Nintendo’s gaming empire, the poor little handheld has been rather cruelly brushed aside to make way for the DS. So, is this the end?

Despite the fact that Shigeru Miyamoto said recently that the Game Boy might not be quite dead and buried (yet), Nintendo’s George Harrison was far more ‘ruthless’ in his comments about the cute little handheld. In a recent interview he said:

“This year in our marketing you really won’t see much push against Game Boy itself, so it will kind of seek its own level. It’s hard to say in the future if we will ever bring back the Game Boy trademark,”

“It was a big risk for us to actually pass on it and call the new product the Nintendo DS, but it was part of Mr. Iwata’s philosophy that if we’re going to make a radical difference and try to reach a new audience, then we have to change the name… We had to make a break even though we had one of the greatest trademarks in the history of the industry.”

As little as three years ago it would have seemed unthinkable that the Game Boy would be a peripheral figure in Nintendo’s future plans in 2007. But, with these comments seemingly being the general thinking of the company, it would be safe to assume that the Game Boy is almost certainly done for. Whilst sales of the system and related software remain strong, Nintendo are keen to point out that this is all done without any marketing or advertising for the console. So, even though Harrison is saying that Nintendo aren’t going to be pouring resources onto the system, it has done pretty well so far with relative neglect. Simply, the system has become fairly self sufficient.

How long it can last under its own steam remains to be seen. I hope after the DS the game boy will come back with amazing graphics more button mashing. It still should be innovative but not as “different” as Wii/DS. Maybe a fusion between gameboy and DS (like with the design of gameboy but it has touch screen or something).

I just started playing Klonoa GBA today. No, the GBA is not dead as long as its incredible library remains available.
