Guitar Hero: Metallica uncovered

Back in February, Activision revealed it has two new disc-based expansions up its sleeve, one of which was soon after announced as Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, the series’ first band-centric installment. As we get near Aerosmith’s late June release, the second of the two band-based Guitar Hero iterations has been unearthed via the company’s recent SEC filing – Guitar Hero: Metallica.

Activision’s report clearly states Guitar Hero: Metallica as one of its upcoming new installments in the series:

“In fiscal 2009, we plan to publish Guitar Hero: On Tour for the NDS; Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: Metallica, and Guitar Hero IV across multiple platforms.”

For those not in the know, Activision’s fiscal year ends on March 31, 2009, which means that the Metallica-based Guitar Hero game should be out by the end of March 2009, very likely sometime after the release of Guitar Hero: World Tour this Fall.

Does Metallica sound like a good choice, or were you expecting some other band to frontline the new expansion?

best Metallica album.
period.

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 03:22:24

No rock band should ever play with a symphony. Ever. Cello, violin, whatever, fine. But a full fucking symphony is just… no.

Comment by mass9 on 2008-06-03 13:51:27

give it a listen man.
If its not the best Metallica album you’ve ever heard, then you sir, are a stone cold liar.

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 17:44:19

I’ve heard parts of it… all it does is remind me of KISS, I’m sorry. =P

Comment by mass9 on 2008-06-03 18:13:30

KISS??!?!??!!??!!

I just spit up coffee all over my screen. Shame too, it was delicious coffee!

and don’t be sorry, BE ASHAMED!!!! lol

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 22:06:20

Lol, it’s the extravagance of it all. It reminds me of the stupid KISS symphony stuff, man.

Comment by Mike on 2008-06-04 03:43:19

Master of Puppets….nuff said!!

Comment by Curtis Jackson on 2008-06-04 23:18:13

That’s probably the least intelligent thing I’ve ever heard regarding music. I don’t even like Metallica, but I have to admit that their playing with the San Francisco Symphony was just brilliant. It’s an excellent performance/CD even if you’re not a fan of Metallica (like me). The fact that you disregard it because it’s a rock band playing with a symphony is disgusting and that closed-minded thinking is a large part of why today’s generation listens to shit music.

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-05 03:44:14

Brilliant? You think extravagance is a good thing?

You’re exactly the kind of gullible consumer that they aim for with that stuff. When they’ve got enough money to rent an entire symphony to play with them, that’s when they’ve lost touch. Metallica’s music isn’t even that complicated, and it sure as hell wasn’t made to be played with a symphony; combining them with an entire symphony is just cutting the quality of both parts by half. You can’t hear one because the other is playing over it (although I suppose that leans more in Metallica’s favor).

Go listen to the Pax Cecilia, they have a string section incorporated into every one of their songs, and they give the damn CD away for free. The composition is so they play together, not over one another.

I’m listening to “Nothing Else Matters” off of S&M right now, and the song just sounds like it’s been robbed of its effect. Either the guitar is drowned out by the brass or there’s a flute getting covered up by the singing and guitar.

Also, Master Puppets sounds like it’s lost its balls (the opening riff with glockenspiel intermingled, oh man). If it didn’t have lyrics it would make a good song for a soundtrack to a video game, though.

At any rate, feel free to continue praising a massive sell-out. Ground-breaking, for sure. =P

..Disappointing. Guitar Hero games shouldn’t be dedicated to one band. Oh well.. At least Metallica’s better than Aeroshit.

Comment by mass9 on 2008-06-03 00:45:12

*unless its Metallica

Comment by The Beef Thief on 2008-06-03 01:04:12

Metallica still is gay…the singer just plain sucks, one of the worst voices ever. The guitar is pretty good though.

Comment by lilnukka on 2008-06-03 01:04:56

lolno

Comment by lilnukka on 2008-06-03 01:05:57

What’s your idea of a good voice, then? The singer from Fall Out Boy?

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 03:26:09

Someone with actual talent, I’d say.

Comment by trj156 on 2008-06-03 04:20:30

Who the fuck do you think you are? Have you ever seen Metallica in concert?

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 06:03:06

You’re actually saying James Hetfield can sing?

I never said they were bad musicians. But James Hetfield singing is just… well, something other than singing, for sure.

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 06:05:48

At that, I have seen live videos, and he only sounds like the records about half of the time.

Comment by TK Chillin on 2008-06-03 01:06:59

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet

Comment by 88 on 2008-06-03 02:42:49

how about disturbed, best fucking vocals and guitar and everything of all time

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 03:27:29

Your musical taste needs a charity to rescue it, it’s so poor.

Comment by Steve Perry on 2008-06-03 02:45:51

If I play this game, will Metallica sue me? :(

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 03:24:16

They will, and then they’ll make a documentary about it. Except half of it will be James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich arguing with each other.

Comment by Pedle Zelnip on 2008-06-03 18:40:55

Best. comment. ever.

Comment by StGermain on 2008-06-04 10:59:24

Napster BAAAAAAD, beer GOOOOOD! One of the funniest moments of the early internet :)

Comment by ManoDestra on 2008-06-03 03:06:05

Release Guitar Hero : Rammstein and I’ll buy it. That’s about the only band that could raise this game out of the gutter for me.

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 03:23:31

But the guitar in Rammstein is so… well, easy.

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 03:31:28

Fuck, even Richard Z’s solo project wouldn’t pass.

Comment by lilnukka on 2008-06-03 03:32:22

I agree with Veritas. They’re a good band, but most of their songs wouldn’t work well on GH.

Comment by ManoDestra on 2008-06-03 15:44:27

I would have to agree, but Rammstein’s the only music I could bear to listen to in Guitar Hero. AOR shit like Aerosmith just makes me want to vomit as well as all the black leather clad, big hair brigade, cliche-driven nonsense like Def Leppard that goes along with it in this lame-wad franchise.

I’d argue that it’s pointless releasing band specific versions of this game. It needs a variety of music to keep the franchise alive. Going with single bands is okay for the fans, but you’re not doing the franchise any favours financially in doing it.

I don’t give a damn anyway. GH bores me rigid. I need more from a game than just pressing buttons on a gimmicky guitar and pretending you’re Eddie Van Halen in front of the TV…

Comment by Pedle Zelnip on 2008-06-03 18:42:03

Are you shitting me? How is a thrash metal band not suited for GH?

Comment by AOmonsta on 2008-06-03 04:56:00

this is the only band they could feature that i would buy. they have so many good songs that would be awesome to play on this game.

Comment by Steve Perry on 2008-06-03 06:38:28

The only band you say?
I’d say Pink Floyd were more up to it, but that’s just the contents of my little noggin for ya.

But as we all know, Neversoft don’t care about quality, only money. Brian Bright is an emo, and all the lovely skateboarding people who gave a damn about their audience seem to be long gone.

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 06:44:59

Pink Floyd would have too many epic songs for one game.

And they’d probably be too slow for the modern public. =P

Comment by Worms on 2008-06-05 13:34:55

Pink Floyd should be in Rock Band not GH.

Comment by Worms on 2008-06-03 05:36:26

Metallica helped kill Napster and acted like complete assholes about digital versions of their music up to not even allowing their tunes on iTunes until recently. Screw them now they want to cash in on digital downloads?

Comment by StGermain on 2008-06-03 12:05:24

Agreed

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 06:04:32

Metallica just isn’t relevant anymore. They were worth something in the late 80s when they represented anti-hair-metal. Now they need to just stop. Especially cashing in with shit like this.

Comment by wakeboardnmoto on 2008-06-03 06:14:01

fade to black, master of puppets, ride the lightning, blackened, metal militia. nuf said
o and fuck st. anger i hope there are no songs from that album

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 06:25:44

I’m not sure what the point of that was.

Comment by Worms on 2008-06-03 06:30:41

Rock Band already has Blackened, Ride The Lightning, And Justice for All, and Enter Sandman already. That’s enough Metallica already. Most of GH Metallica will probably half playing a plastic guitar the other half being Lars or James and bitching at one another and whining about themselves.

Comment by Veritas on 2008-06-03 06:35:25

GH: Metallica 2: Group Therapy

Comment by Steve Perry on 2008-06-03 06:34:50

I want them to do a Guitar Hero: Bucks Fizz edition.

Comment by N0 N33D on 2008-06-03 11:22:26

I’d love to see 2 bands specialised, one would be System of a Down, and the other would be a Foo Fighters, now you know that’s going to sell in droves, based on their humongous fan base.

Comment by StGermain on 2008-06-03 12:06:36

Bring out GH Queen already!!!

Comment by fetter on 2008-06-03 16:36:20

omg!!! i said that they should do this! i want this game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by obscure on 2008-06-03 18:03:11

So we are down to releasing full-paid-games instead the appropriate dlc?

Comment by Pedle Zelnip on 2008-06-03 18:42:34

Why yes, why do you ask? :p

Comment by PilotNYC on 2008-06-03 19:21:12

Bring on METALLICA!!! METALLICA!!!! c’mon!!! METALLICA!!!! Supposedly Rock Band was to release a full Metallica album for purchase. WTF happened to that?

Comment by Craw Killer on 2008-06-03 20:56:30

My vote goes for Guitar Hero: Yam

Comment by l ee roy on 2008-06-03 21:24:07

This is greeeeaaaaaaaat : :: !#: :::):):):):)

Comment by SOADer on 2008-06-06 02:55:44

Hell yeah GH: SoaD.
Umm…you guys are retarded. Why the hell are you fighting over which bands are good and which are bad. Every single person has their own taste in music and if you you are so close minded to only listen to and acknowledge one style of music, then you must be living a very depressing life.
Personally: I love both Aerosmith and Metallica, think both games will definitely be worth playing.

Comment by MegadethHeadBanger on 2008-10-15 01:50:42

This game is gonna kick ass.. Metallica rocks!!

But I think they should make a GH: Megadeth!!

Comment by čaks on 2008-11-20 19:24:24
