XBOX360 Outsells PS3 by a Landslide on Black Friday
Microsoft has released their sales data from Black Friday, the busiest day of the American shopping year. Sales of the XBOX 360 rose 25% relative to post-thanksgiving shopping last year; due in no small part to the significant drops in prices since this day last year. Microsoft claims that their console outsold the rival PS3 by a ratio of 3:1.
Microsoft claims the rise in sales was spurned by the recent release of hot selling exclusives like Gears of War 2, Fable II and Lips. Alongside the launch of the New Xbox Experience, which upgraded the Xbox to have quite a bit of new functionality. For American consumers, the feature of the New Xbox Experience most likely to push them into a purchase is the ability to instantly stream HD movies and TV episodes from Netflix, an online rental outlet. Currently, the Xbox 360 is the only gaming device capable of providing this functionality.
The day after the American holiday Thanksgiving, Black Friday is the day most consumers start their holiday shopping. The day gets its name from the fact that this is traditionally the first day of the year companies see the ink on their balance sheets change from red to black, deficit to profit. As the day has evolved, retailers offer steep discounts on a small number of items to spurn consumers into a frenzy to be the first to reach the items when the store opens. These crowds are often pushy, and occasionally violent, all in the name of finding a great deal on something that is most likely intentionally under stocked. The picture above shows one such scene.

It’s cheaper and comes with a lot less because -most people don’t need half of the crap that comes with the PS3-. It’s overpriced because Sony forces people to buy into a whole “experience,” and not just a game console, which is all most people want. This is one of the reasons the Wii has constant sales.

The great thing that MS did was to give the customer what he wants: choice. You can buy one with or without a hard drive depending on your choice. With PS3, you’re stuck with it whether you want it or not and they tried to force consumers to pay through the nose for their exuberant hardware development. Then surprise surprise everyone bought the 360 instead because it came out earlier, had great software support, was cheaper and gave you component based hardware which allowed you to pick and choose your own option.
It’s a no-brainer which system to buy on that basis alone. PS3 is miles behind 360 and I can’t see them recouping this loss. Sony will have to do better with its next console and marketing strategy if they want to get some kudos back again. They’ve lost so many customers and so much respect in the past 5 years it’s unbelievable.

Second, the PS3 is far from useless. The fact that 9/10 of random strangers you meet would own a 360 should not imply that the PSN is lacking in gamers to compete against. 9/10 of the games that come out, release on both systems. The PS3 has a built in hard drive, the 360 comes ‘cheap’ w/o one, causing you to spend another 35$ on a memory card. The PS3 has BluRay. The PS3 has capability for superior quality games, in both size and graphics. The PS3 has internet. The PS3 allows me to download copies of movies I rent onto a PSP for mobile viewing.
The ONLY drawback to the PS3 is that chances are… your friends own a 360.

When I wrote that I was thinking of something along the lines of Final Fantasy 7 for the psOne. Something far into the life of a system that far exceeds anything rivals will ever hope to make.

Though ps3 does have the best specs therefore best picture and everything else, most games do not come out for both systems, most come out for 360. 360 has SUPERIOR online play and an overall online establishment. The problem lies with the BLU-ray player itself. 360 has sold more and will keeping selling more because #1 1 yr head start and #2 a video game console without an advanced DVD system such as the ps3 with a Blu ray. Had sony created a ps3 version without the Blu-ray player it would have stayed in competition for longer. Regardless modern gaming is about online play and 360 is vastly superior therefore in the long run 360 would sell more anyway even if they were around the same price and released at the same time.

The sales figures for 360’s do not reflect the real number of 360s in use. At least a 3rd (generous)of Xbox’s will be returned. For instance, I am now on my 6th one. Bought the 5th on Black Friday and it ate a disc 3 hours later. Exchanged it on Saturday. The other 4 were Red Rings of death all within the store return period of 3 months. I only bought another because I wanted GOW2 - which turned out disapointing as no one plays the multiplayer games I was looking forward to in it. SOLID single player game though, and Horde (which you can find players for) is good. - digress. Point is, since this has turned into a comparison flame I will add unbiased information. I own all 3 consoles. PS3 IS better built, cheaper in the long run, and has more utility. The 360 is cheap built junk with some currently better online options. They have added som great ustility with the last update though - I am impressed. The Wii is solid and fun, but lacks games for the more hardcore. I purchased all systems on launch day.

It’s a guarantee that if your system died, and you bought a new one, that counts as 2 towards xbox’s stats.
I’m not sure on the returns/exchanges counting (I would think they count their sales #’s by how many Wal Mart bought in bulk, not how many Wal Mart sold to consumers?). But I’ve seen enough people comment that they’ve bought multiple xbricks to know that it’s a widespread thing.

While I agree that the PS3 is superior hardware-wise, both in quality of the components and quality of the package… the comaprison the the 360 is a joke.
The 360 completely destroys the PS3 in terms of software (features, dashboards, updates), online play, games, controller (although thats arguable as personal preference.. the other points are simply facts), userbase and support. Add on things like the Community Games and the ridiculously better DEV tools for the 360 and the comparison is simply silly to anyone who can see facts.

Incorrect. They are both gaming controllers. One is ergonomically superior to the other. The XBox 360 controller is the most natural controller I have ever used.
I would also agree that the Wii is for a lower age range as well as some family party fun, but definitely not for lone gaming.
However, when it comes to a choice for proper hard core gaming there’s only one choice and it has to be the 360. PSN is terrible. XBox Live is superb and well established. MS were spot on to focus on software rather than hardware like Sony did. XNA is a tremendously flexible framework for creating games. Any developer will tell you it’s a complete pain in the ass to develop for Sony machines.
You could almost compare it to the BetaMax/VHS war of years ago where BetaMax was actually better quality, yet failed. However, that was due to different economic reasons. In this case, the 360 is the people’s choice.

Since the XMB update, it offers virtually everything that Live does except for the new Netflix streaming. And I bet that eventually gets there too.

PC games have had free online for years and it’s been great. It’s kind of a moot point to bring that up, now.

I still hold to my original point, elitist though it may be. I’d rather pay £30 for a quality gaming service where the other people who are on there are gamers only who have also paid their subscription to do just that. It’s a deterrent to kids and casual gamers. That to my mind is what makes it the #1 gaming service. If they stop charging for it, it would fall to pieces rapidly.

As I said, look at PC online gaming - hardly any connection trouble for most games, it’s free, and the community is just the same, if not better, than on the 360. At least when you’re playing a PC game, there’s a higher chance of playing with people that know what they’re doing because they took the time to build their computer. I love the fact that consoles “just run” games, but that also allows for lots of idiots to play, too.

If you check out VGChartz based on data of release sales you will see that the PS3 is doing just fine for sales. One year and two years in and sales are keeping pace with each other (actually PS3 is doing better in most countries except US). Both systems have great games! Both system share most of the same games and current generation titles are identical on both systems - Ports always suck a bit compared to the original.
So people exchanged lots of their rrod 360s but hey lets call it a sale. 360 to PS3 returns ratio 1000:1

The only thing that PS3 has going for it is that you can use a bluetooth headset, and non-proprietary Hard Drive. This proprietary stuff that MS has rolled out with the 360 is Bull Sh.. Having a built in bigger hard drive, and Bluray is a plus. BluRay only matters if you own an HD TV though… Long term Sony may close the gap and surpass MS in number of consoles sold… years down the road.
But fact… Xbox LIVE will always be better than the PSN. The tools and ease with which to develop for Windows/360 will always better easier/better than PS3. The online hardcore community has been won with the Xbox 360. Sony can’t win that battle ever with the PS3. The PS3 is a solid piece of hardware… too bad their hardware is too hard to develop on, they force you into going bluray which makes the unit cost more expensive, and their online PSN is subpar to Xbox LIVE. I’ll eventually own a PS3… but only for Bluray/exclusive titles… Otherwise Xbox 360 wins hands down in cost/game library/online ablilty/install base, etc.
The RROD is a blip on my radar personally. I’ve experienced it once, and yes at the time a pain but the 3 year warranty from date of manufacture, and all the benefits I’ve mentioned that the Xbox 360 trumps the PS3, make the RROD and cheaper price of the 360 a non issue.

Can someone please tell me how Live is better than PSN? Without vague comments like it is easier to develop for - that is meaningless unless you are a developer for both systems. List the attributes that make it better, please. Here is what I know about PSN -

Hardly ever down - except for scheduled maintenance
Great variety of downloadable titles - Flow, Everyday Shooter, Siren, Wipeout HD, etc.
No limit in size of game that can be made available for download
Has video downloads and loads of demos, etc.
Yeah I don’t know where they’re getting their information. The claims that PSN has shittier connections is false. Every game I’ve played online has had the same expected performance as my 360/Live games.
So that I’m not biased, I will point out ONE flaw of PSN: when you update, you download a complete new install, not just a patch for the latest code. takes 15-20 minutes every time. Whereas on the 360 it takes 30 seconds for dashboard updates.
Completely agree that is a flaw but since I have a fast connection it is not too horrible.
I would love to see Live and PSN get better by stealing ideas from each other - it only makes the games better.

Not necessarily true, while scheduled maintenances are few and far between, there have been issues with XBL being down (though a rare occurence in of itself). Remember December last year? Especially when three guys tried suing MS for it?
I recall Live dying intermittently on a Friday night 2 weeks ago. It kept booting me from Gears, at least 3 times as I signed off and couldn’t sign back in. Finally I went to bed.
I’ve never once been booted from the PSN while playing a game on my PS3.

Theyre virtually identical at this point, except Live has a larger user base. But When you’re talking millions vs. millions, I don’t think you’d ever notice the difference when trying to find a multiplayer game.
Live costs money. Live has Netflix. Live has Avatars.
PSN is free. PSN just lets you download, but I’m sure will one day support streaming. PSN will one day support Home.
(Before you chime in with ‘those aren’t implemented yet’, note that PSN is a younger online service than Live.)

Being able to watch movies together in a party is another one, which is actually CONFIRMED. I can indeed say “those aren’t implemented yet,” because you have no idea whether or not streaming will come along. Home is going to be a glorified chat room/Second Life take-off for a console, so I wouldn’t even count that (or XBL avatars) as a selling point.

Also, the seamless integration of Windows PCs with the 360 and Media Center.
All things PSN doesn’t have.
PSN is basically Xbox Live lite. If you feel like paying for those features, go for it. If not, well, you’ll be happy with PSN. Although, probably not with the game selection.
Media Center is inferior to TVersity. PS3 supports TVersity.

I remember when I first set up media center, some format wasn’t working, but TVersity supported it. Apparently it has more codec support than Media Center.

My computer came with a TV tuner when I bought it, but they didn’t give me the codec I needed to actually watch TV. WTF?
Anyway, as for the seamless integration thing, TVersity isn’t out of the box. People won’t know about it without word-of-mouth (example: me :P). The Media Center feature is more heavily advertised since it’s first party software, and so is more likely to be used. It’s like when Mac users say “oh, but Macs CAN play games… with Parallels, on Windows.” If it’s not native, it can’t really be considered a selling point, as only the tech-savvy will find out about those things.
O ic your talkin about that time that EVERYONE WENT OUT A BOUGHT A 360, and when they all signed on Live, it overloaded and it was laggy for like 2 weeks… I guess I’ll just suck it up cause in the long run I’ll have to wait 1 min to get a game, as opposed to your 5 minutes to get a game because the lack of PS3’s out there…Once again pull your head out of your ass and surface bro

I had all three consoles (Sold my Wii as it was not played that often and I got more $ than I paid for it). The PS3 is finally coming around with games and it’s online service is free. Isn’t that awesome!! The Xbox 360 is an easy platform to develop for, good games, Netflix, and Xbox Live. Wow that’s awesome too! Xbox Live goes down occasionally and costs me $50/year and some PS3 online games don’t work at first and make you pay for Blu-Ray - both have problems. Oh no, strengths and weaknesses for each. Actually we can argue, its our right, at least until Obama takes it away. PS3 is better then Xbox, and yes live is better the PSN, but I believe that has to do with the fact that Microsoft has had a huge head start over Sony as they have been in the online game sense long before the first Xbox came out. Given some time Sony’s online experience will improve as we have seen it improve substantially already over its early iterations.
What I defend against is people saying its a crap system, or a system with no games, which makes no sense considering almost all of the games that come out now come out on both systems, with exception of the exclusives. But the fact that Xbox has outsold PS3 has much less to do with Xbox being superior, and more to do with the fact that Microsoft beat Sony to market, and because the PS3 is a higher priced machine, and rightly so, it offers quite a bit more.
People like to shit on the fact that its a BluRay player, and we hear the continuous crap talk about all it does it play BluRay movies. Well we all know that’s far from true, beside if you really expect us to feel bad about the fact that our system plays the format that won the HiDef war, guess what, we don’t. That’s hardly a negative, and it has helped to sell more PS3’s, so thanks for pointing out that its a BluRay player but we already knew, its one of the reasons we bought it, and we smile every time we walk into a store and buy a new movie on BluRay.

You’re right, it’s not a crap system (at least in my opinion). Whether or not the 360 is superior, though, doesn’t matter, because Microsoft’s marketing is. The head start was obviously a big help, but it’s not like it was accidental… it was a planned move that M$ knew would pay off (RROD regardless). The user-base is growing through word of mouth, either by correct or incorrect “facts,” and smart appeals to varying demographics.
What it comes down to is majority rule, I suppose. Just because people buy it more, does that make it better (rhetorical question)? It’s like the Israel-Palestine conflict - whether or not the land was really Israel’s to begin with doesn’t matter, because they took it anyway. It’s theirs, regardless of whether it should be or not.
Either way, as I said, I would prefer to have both. They really do both have good points. I just need for Sony to lower the price and remove some of those features that are useless to me before I will get one. :P

I have both systems and people defending the PS3 as a superior system are just dopey. There is not one game on the PS3 that cannot be done on the 360. Thats the problem you clowns.
Blu-ray, internet, etc. etc. and the games are no way better than the 360. So what did I pay for? A system that can do a bunch of other crap that play the same games as the 360.
I have no hope left that the PS3 will deliver a much greater gaming experience than the 360. None!! Sony has won the format battle but lost the videogame war. That’s a fact not opinion. More games and more systems sold on the 360.

By the looks of it they are scaling down there production and staff, and i bet they cut back on things they sell and don’t make much of a profit on i.e. the ps3. They only broke even this year i think, but i’m not 100% sure.
